A new professional choir has been formed with the aim of researching, recovering and performing Spain's rich tradition of Renaissance polyphony. The "Coro Victoria" founded and conducted by Renaissance and Baroque music expert, Ana Fernández Vega, gave its inaugural concert at Madrid's San Ildefonso church last week. The program was a tribute to the choir's namesake: Tomás Luis de Victoria, Spain's most illustrious composer of the Golden Age, and featured both his early motets and a late mass. Ana Fernández Vega spoke with Alison Hughes before the concert about some of the complexities of polyphony and about Spain's unpaid debt to its own musical heritage.
