Who better than a mother to solve a crime?

Laura Lebrel, is a police inspector; brilliant at her work, but short-sighted in her relationships. Capable of unravelling the most complex crime, but incapable of detecting love, even when it is right under her nose.

Mother to two 5 year old boys, two naughty little demons, and recently separated from Jacobo, her superior at the police station, she is trying to reconstruct her life and find love, although she does not realise that Mr. Right could well be Martín, her inseparable colleague. The person with whom she spends the most time and whose company she most enjoys. They have known each other since they were at police academy and are always bickering … but this apparent hostility covers up deeper feelings, which go back to when they first met, although, owing to Laura’s relationship with Jacobo, these feelings were never allowed to surface.

The responsibility of being both mother and policewoman sometimes seems too much for Laura, but in the end she always manages to combine her two roles. And even if in her love life she is an absolute disaster, in her professional life she is always on the ball. The most striking feature of her modus operandi is the little importance Laura gives to physical or material evidence. Analyses and forensic tests leave her cold. She prefers to call on what she calls her sixth sense: her intuition. And to date this has never let her down.

Not only is Laura’s professional life surrounded by mystery, because she will soon be faced with the disappearance of her sister, Veronica; a disappearance which will be connected with the businessman who Laura has just started to date. With this state of affairs, will Laura manage to rebuild her emotional life and find love again?

CHARACTERS:

LAURA LEBREL: Mom detective: woman, mother and police officer.

Laura has been separated for just a few months. Her ex-husband, Jacobo, is also her boss at the police station. Since they separated, Laura has had to rise to the challenge of rebuilding her life. But this is somewhat difficult, taking into account two factors: her sons, and her job as policewoman. But here we have Martin, her trusty colleague, who she gets on with and compliments perfectly on a professional level, and with whom an inevitable unresolved sexual tension will be created.

Chaotic, patient, reflexive and observant, she finds it difficult to draw the line between her personal and professional lives (several times she has had to race to the scene of the crime laden with shopping bags …) She knows how to win over the witnesses in a case, or, on the other hand, how to drive them crazy. Her investigation methods may cause bewilderment… but surprisingly she always manages to come up with the culprit.

MARTIN MARESCA: inseparable colleague. A charming, shameless womaniser.

Inspector Maresca suffers from a gut rejection to any kind of authority. He is undisciplined and arrogant, and quite often his lack of respect for rules jeopardises the investigations. Surprisingly, this trait has never been reprimanded at the police headquarters. The inspector’s sense of humour and his continual joking have made their mark on his colleagues and he is immensely liked by a majority of the officers in the division.

The partnership formed by the two inspectors is nothing short of remarkable. Whilst she is patient, thoughtful and observant, he is restless and impulsive. She believes in dialogue, in encircling the suspect with apparently innocent comments and gradually weave a spider’s web around him. Martin is often more for direct accusation or a threat in disguise. We could say that while Inspector Lebrel does not mind losing a little time persuading a suspect to open the door of his house, Inspector Maresca would prefer the short cut through an open window, alleging that, if it is not closed, it is almost an invitation.

It has taken many years for the two inspectors to adapt to each other, so they understand each other perfectly. Martin, behind his lady-killer mask, harbours deep feelings for Laura.

JACOBO SALGADO: Infatuated ex-husband. Honest, loyal and sporadically unfaithful.

Jacobo is chief inspector at the police station where Laura works. But he is also her ex-husband. He is presumed to still be in love with her and to want to salvage their marriage. This supposition is based on several facts; he always assigns cases to her in which her personal safety is not jeopardised; if he can, he never leaves her alone with any male colleague; he is reluctant to remove his wedding ring and the excuses he comes up with to evade attending appointments with the lawyer in charge of their divorce proceedings are usually ridiculous, or downright pathetic. On the other hand, they are frequently quarrelling at the police station, as Laura must find it very difficult to have her ex-husband as a boss.

He is affectionate with his children, whom he continually visits, and the boys seem very fond of him. Likewise, although he has reasons for feeling jealous of Martin, they both know how to hold their composure and their relationship is apparently cordial.

JULIA MARTINEZ: The spurned mistress. Upright. Systematic and analytical.

Julia Martinez’s curriculum is faultless. Her professional career will endorse this and leave no room for doubt as to her efficiency. Her work method is systematic, analytical and scientific, and therefore radically opposed to inspector Lebrel’s approach. It is clear that Julia does not consider her colleague a proper police officer, and watches anxiously for the slightest slip in her investigations to run her down. Her relationship with the rest of her colleagues is no better, except with Jacobo, Laura’s ex-husband, and … her ex-lover.

VICENTE CUEVAS: Cheerful, amiable colleague and eternally aspiring to police officer.

First year police constable. His nerves and lack of confidence may make it also his last. Police constable Cuevas took more than four years to pass his entrance exam to the Corps. His youth, lack of character and inexperience make him an easy target for the criminals he is supposed to be arresting. His lack of credibility as policeman on the beat is compensated by a great will to learn and unfailing obedience to his superiors’ orders. At the same time, his amiable, cheerful character make him a likable colleague. Martin’s loyal friend, for whom Laura is like an elder sister.
