PRINCESS PACA

TV Movie - Historical Drama

1 x 104'

The film tells the story of Francisca Sánchez del Pozo, "Paca", and the Prince of Letters, Nicaraguan Rubén Darío.

La Princesa Paca

In 1956, Francisca Sánchez, married to José Villacastín, and already in the twilight of her life, receives a visit from two writers, Antonio Oliver and Carmen Conde. The couple tries to convince her to donate the contents of the trunk where she keeps the memories of Rubén Darío. Only in this way will it be possible to know in depth relevant aspects of the writer's life. Paca, at first, refuses, but the visit of the two writers reminds her of her youth.

Fifty years ago Francisca, known as "Paca", helped her father, a royal gardener, to take care of the rose bushes in the Casa de Campo. At the age of 24, she could not have imagined that her life would change radically one morning in 1898.

Rubén Darío, at the height of his career as a poet, diplomat and journalist, strolled with Valle-Inclán through the royal gardens of the Casa de Campo in Madrid, where Paca worked. The modernist poet fell in love with the young woman. It mattered little that Paca was illiterate, of peasant origin or that her parents were opposed to the relationship. Only the death of the "prince of letters" in 1916 put an end to a passionate love story, which would have to face the conventions of the time and Rubén Darío's legal wife, the beautiful Rosario Murillo.

Back in 1956, Francisca Sánchez del Pozo changed her mind: that story deserved to be known by the whole world. The trunk, with letters, books and personal objects of Rubén Darío, would be bequeathed to the Spanish State for study and cataloguing.

The story became known to the general public in 2014 with the publication of 'La Princesa Paca', written by the granddaughter of that gardener, Rosa Villacastín, and the writer Manuel Francisco Reina.
