'A building like a city', the future Provincial Hospital of Badajoz
The rehabilitation project will respect the exterior of the building and will convert the interior into a space with an urban aesthetic.
The winning proposal in the Regional Government's competition for a project to restore the Provincial Hospital of Badajoz prioritises respect for the history and value of the 1694 building, while using it as an integrating element. According to its creator, the architect José María Sánchez, the building is defined as "a city within Badajoz", hence the motto of the project is 'A building like a city'.
The interior will reveal the original structure. The ground floor will be paved in stone, like a roadway, and the walls will be whitewashed "very much like the building's original state," the architect comments. The courtyards will be treated like town squares and the corridors like streets. The 3,500 square metres of the ground floor will be a gourmet market with rectangular business premises to be rented out to private enterprises.
