Prime Time Series - Jouth / Drama

S2 - 10 x 60'

Two years after his experience at Anne Frank, Hugo puts an end to the voluntary leave of absence he requested after his experience in the United States to become a civil servant and return to the classroom. His return coincides with the implementation of the IV Plan for the Prevention of Early School Leaving (PEEPAET) and the initiative of the Regional Minister, Reyes Tena, to promote a new educational project in a particularly troubled area in his community, located in the area of Campo de Calatrava (Ciudad Real). Several candidates are offered the opportunity to lead this initiative and carry out the educational project to help stop school dropouts. Proposals are discussed in a Commission chaired by Reyes, and the second winning option is precisely the most radical, signed by a certain Hugo Ibarra Toledo, our protagonist, who will get the position when the first option, a teacher, declines the offer.

On the first day of the course, Hit drives to Puertollano, with his L on the back windshield (he has just got his license) and his bicycle on the roof rack. The first thing he encounters is a group of protesters blocking the road. They are employees fighting against a renewable energy company that has announced the closure of its factory and the dismissal of 139 employees, almost the entire district where HIT will be working.

That incident already announces what he is going to find: a rarefied atmosphere, a climate of anxiety and fear of a people plunged into an uncertain future. His intervention at León Felipe High School, home of this pilot project, is aimed at a group of girls and boys (between 15 and 17 years old) who have moved from ESO to the Basic Grade. The place they have been assigned to give classes is bleak. The construction of an annex to the school building is half done (the COVID stopped the works), so Hit must make do with three barracks, a courtyard that unifies them, and a decrepit basketball court divided into modules that serves as a multipurpose area: library, meeting room, thinking corner, play area and his own office... In these three barracks, the 30 students selected for the Basic Grade will study with everything but the desire to study.

Hugo takes the words FAILURE and GHETTO to the place where he is going to live during this new stage: an apartment in an estate owned by Francis, Matthew's single mother, precisely one of his future students who, apart from receiving tenants, makes a living by driving one of the school buses. Hit hates the countryside, the chickens, the bell towers, the insects... he feels he has dug himself into a hole from which he will not know how to get out, but in his mind he repeats a mantra: everything you want is on the other side of fear.

In the previous season, HIT had to fight against vandalism. This time, his struggle is fundamentally against different enemies: FAILURE, DESPAIR and ABUSE that are going to lead their "cure" towards goals of SELF-ESTEEM, CONFIDENCE and JUSTICE. A journey that not only concerns the students of León Felipe but also the adults around them. This time, Hugo tries by all means to build a school that works outwards. It is impossible to open roads to the future if the present denies it. How to restore hope to a territory condemned to unemployment, to families without jobs, to a landscape that leaves no other way out but to emigrate?

THE STUDENTS

LUCÍA (16 years)

Beautiful, racial and strong, obsessed with finding a father for Aitana, her 8-month-old daughter, she says she is not like the others and that she is in class to really learn the hairdresser's trade and one day work at Telecinco. Normally, she relies on the help of her parents to take care of her daughter, but the factory closure has complicated things. Her father is the union leader, and both he and her mother are completely involved in demonstrations and actions, not all of them sensible, to get their jobs back.

Lucia's failure in her studies stems from her disinterest in studying. Lucia needs to learn by doing, "touching what she studies", and pregnancy and her obstinacy to be independent have led her to fail her 3rd ESO exams. She works part-time at the supermarket in the shopping center, is a great fighter and is determined to do everything possible to give Aitana a good future, but her outlook on life, based on finding the ideal man for her and her daughter, gets in the way.

TEO (16 years)

With his self-esteem at rock bottom and diagnosed with ADHD, Teo doesn't know how to talk or argue, he solves everything with blows. He only works through punishment, although sometimes he can't even make him see what his mistakes are. Teo is two people at the same time: one when he takes his medication and a completely different one when he is not taking it. The only company he accepts nowadays is that of Chelo, his inseparable friend, with whom he enjoys hurting others, although it is hard for him to bear most of the time. Nowadays, her favorite pastime is to generate violence and confusion in equal parts. They hate anyone who thinks they are superior or who is willing to get into their lives and turn them upside down.

His failure is the family he was born into, the psychological violence his father exercised over them, obsessive about control and order, unable to accept his son's special needs. His life has been a constant punishment and all he wants is for the world to pay for it. His mother has enrolled him in the hotel business so that he can do something with his future, but he is incapable of anything, he is not interested and on top of that he is terrible at it. He follows the same program as the rest, but his needs are different: he needs more time to do things, very clear questions, shorter... All this helps his lack of motivation and makes him feel more and more unmotivated.

CHELO (16 years)

Chelo knows no empathy and enjoys her false life with very few guests - right now, Teo. She is beautiful and she knows it, with a narcissistic personality disorder, she is the living representation of selfishness, going her own way and only interested in what brings her personal benefit.

She lives with her mother and grandmother, both on the street after the closing of the factory, which hinders all the plans that Chelo had. On top of that, they have enrolled her in Personal Image to help her finish her ESO, as if that would be of any use to her. Thank goodness she is not alone in this and can count on Teo. Friend, period, no sex. Together they form a rather extreme couple, full of naïve violence that materializes in hooliganism, absurd actions, sometimes almost suicidal.

Celebrities drive her crazy, her networks are full of photos with celebrities, even pretending that one of those celebrities is her partner: she is a virtual compulsive liar. Within this fantasy in which she lives and which she needs to be part of, she is sure that her father is David Bisbal and she wants to meet him. The false life she invents is a desperate attempt to reach that father figure. Chelo is clear about what she wants to be in life: famous.

ROMÁN (16 years)

Extreme right-wing. Román moves through the hatred he feels for those who do not think like him and firmly defends that, to get what you want, you must be willing to make a good scandal, which leaves a mark and is not easy to fix. His parents are the rich people of the village, with several lands that they have adapted as hunting grounds, with an inn for guests to stay, where they organize dinners and hunts. For this reason Román has chosen Hospitality and Tourism as a specialty, to train himself in order to, someday, run the family business.

Roman lives with the constant need to test his family. The plot of being adopted makes him panic that he will be left behind again, he needs to know how long they can hold out before they abandon him like his biological parents did. What is the reason they left him behind? At the same time, he feels gratitude for this second chance that his real parents, Spaniards like him, have given him. His ideals grow along with theirs, and his family and Spain become the most important things in his life.

KARMEN (15 years)

An extreme leftist and a die-hard defender of women's rights, Karmen is a sort of rural version of an anti-establishment. She is against all forms of power, against any kind of oppression of her and her people. She refuses to follow the social norms imposed by a heteropatriarchal society that wants her to keep quiet, because it's about time we stop kneeling and take what is ours.

Her parents are communists who move through different platforms, being both very involved with the union and all the protests against the factory, from which they have both been fired. Karmen believes that they have achieved nothing and that this is the only thing that can be achieved through the system, so she is willing to go further. Because of this, she has also done badly at school: they try to indoctrinate her and she refuses. But her parents force her to study, at least until she is old enough to drop out. So she has opted to take a basic degree in hotel management.

Everything must be destroyed, justice does not exist. Vegan, animalist and feminist, Karmen believes that she is right at all times, she rejects love and affection, they are nothing but weaknesses and defeats; she has a very black vision of life in which everything oppresses and everything attacks. The only good ones are his own, either you go with them or you go against them. Her only stable friendship was with Matthew, but the pandemic led him to seclude himself in his room and she hardly knows anything about him anymore. She has tried everything to help him, but she is beginning to think it's impossible.
